Bees and Birds Farms

Bees and Birds Farms is a small family operated poultry, grain, herb and honey farm. We raise heritage breeds of chickens and turkeys, pastured on over 20 acres of beautiful grass and alfalfa. We raise heritage grains for supplemental feed, and are starting a culinary and medicinal herb field and a small apiary.

The rejuvenation of the soil and restoration of holistic and sustainable land use practices are the underlying ideals of our farm. Our mission is to provide our local community with excellent quality, local foods and herbal remedial lifestyle choices, while doing our part to use natural agricultural practices. There is something very special about eating real food that supports, builds, and heals the community.

Our motivation comes from love. It's a desire for living in correct relationship to the natural world around us. Purchasing food raised with that depth of dedication and land husbandry brings that love right to your table and home.

About Our Farm

At Bees and Birds Farms, we feel incredibly lucky that we get to do what we love. We love birds, we love bees, and we love the land. We have a responsibility to honor our own native heritage, and that of the plants and animals by which we thrive.

We are growing a variety of ancient and heirloom grains for our homegrown mixed poultry feed. We vow never to plant a single gmo seed. A variety of dried herbs is included in our feed because, well, why not? They contribute immensely to the overall health of the flock; there are truly astounding numerous uses for medicinal herbs on our farm. We practice sustainability, and never spray the fields or pens with chemicals, treat with hormones or antibiotics, or treat our birds or bees unethically. Our farm is 100% pollinator friendly.

Bees and Birds Farms is a proud member of the American Livestock Conservancy. We are starting our own breeding program and will have our own heritage breed hatchery starting 2018!

We are incredibly excited to be working with Native Seeds SEARCH, a non-profit organization working to conserve, distribute and document the adapted and diverse varieties of agricultural seeds, their wild relatives and the role these seeds play in cultures of the American Southwest and northwest Mexico. We are growing their New Mexico Amaranth, a gorgeous but overlooked and underappreciated relative of pig weed, rich in many important nutrients that can be used as a feed crop as well as a delicious food for people. Our task is to grow enough to add to our homegrown feed mix, as well as supporting the conservation by increasing the amount of seed produced in a given year. It is our most time consuming and labor intensive crop, but trusted to be well worth the effort!

We are certified by CNG (Certified Naturally Grown), a grassroots organization. To learn more about CNG and their standards and requirements visit www.cngfarming.org
